Policy

The Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture is responsible for the national academic networking and provided for this purpose a budget of € 4.5 million for 2004. This ministry funds also the national grid initiative.

National GRIDs

The AUSTRIAN GRID initiative aims to create a national grid infrastructure on top of the existing national computing and communication hardware in Austria. The project was accepted by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture in January 2004 and received € 3 million funding for the period 2005-6.

National academic network

ACOnet - the Austrian Academic Computer Network - interconnects the cities with universities (Vienna, Graz, Leoben, Klagenfurt, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Linz and Dornbirn) and Eisenstadt. The technology used is DWDM with Gigabit Ethernet. ACOnet has a 622 Mbps connection with GÉANT.
ACOnet plays an important rôle in the international connectivity of Central and Eastern European countries by providing links to several of these countries.
