Policy

A Russian-Belorussian programme for the production of supercomputers called SKIF (SuperKomputernaja Iniciativa Feniks) started in 1999.

Supercomputing facilities for the academia

The United Institute of Informatics Problems (UIIP) of the Belarussian Academy of Sciences has a Beowulf cluster (576 Xeon/2200).

National academic network

UNIBEL - the Belarussian network for science and education - connects 7 nodes in the Minsk area at 2-10 Mbps and 6 regional nodes at 64 kbps. Connectivity with Internet is at 512 Kbps. UNIBEL is operated by a centre resorting under the Ministry of Education.

The institutes of the Belarussian Academy of Sciences use their own network, BASNET. At present it interconnects over 100 organizations (research institutes, ministries, libraries, educational institutions). BASNET has 7 central nodes, 5 linked at 10-100 Mbps, two using a 2 Mbps satellite link. This network has dedicated international connections to Moscow (256 kbps) and Hamburg (DESY, 64 kbps). The connection to GÉANT is 34 Mbps through PIONIER (Poland).
