National academic network

Latvia has two research networks.

LANET (Latvian Academic Network) is a network for education and science which is only available in Riga. The Department of Information Technology of the University of Latvia manages LANET. The backbone is 100 Mbps. The link to GÉANT is 3.5 Mbps. The budget in 2004 is € 1 million.

LATNET provides data communication services to research and education institutes in Latvia. The star-shaped backbone operates at 1 Gbps and large sites typically access at 2 Mbps. LATNET has a 34 Mbps link to GÉANT. The 2004 budget is € 1.9 million. It is mainly financed through charging the users.
