Policy
A subprogramme of the National R&D Plan addresses the transition to an Information Society. This strategic objective
of the Romanian government for the period 2001-2007 is one of the conditions for EU accession. One goal of this subprogramme
is the development of academic networks

National academic network
There are two academic networks in Romania.
The RNC (Romanian National Computer Network) connects 6 universities and over 100 other education institutes.
The backbone capacity is 100 Mbps. The connection to RoEduNet is 100 Mbps. RNC is operated by the National R&D Institute for Informatics. The € 1 million funding in 2004 comes
from the government (70%) and from its users.
The RoEduNet network is co-ordinated by the Ministry of Education and Research. It provides connectivity to
universities, high-level education institutes and research institutes but also to the high schools and elementary
schools and to not-for-profit and governmental institutions (e.g. ministries, city councils, hospitals, etc).
Its backbone operates at 34 Mbps and 155 Mbps and connects 7 network operating centres situated in the cities with
large universities. A total of 40 PoPs are linked to these 7 NOC’s with 2 Mbps links. The link to GÉANT is 622 Mbps.
The 2005 budget is € 2.6 million and is provided by the government.

National GRID
The RoGRID initiative aims to establish a national scale Romanian computational grid. RoGRID is co-ordinated by the
National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics.
