National academic network
ARNES is the academic and research network of Slovenia. It was established in 1992 by the Ministry for Science and
Technology (which mainly funds the costs of ARNES, € 5.6 million in 2004) and the Ministry for Education and Sport.
The backbone of ARNES operates at 1 Gbps speed and connects (typically at 1 Gbps) the Slovenian universities,
higher education institutes and government research organisations. Libraries and many secondary and primary schools
are connected at 2 Mbps or less. International connectivity consists of 2x622 Mbps links to GÉANT.
